EIA Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report & Insight 9/24/2026
EIA Storage Update: +44 Bcf vs +50 Bcf Est
Signal: Slight Bullish
Amid the peak summer cooling season, power burn continues to drive natural gas demand, the EIA reported an injection of 44 Bcf for the week. This was 6 Bcf smaller than the consensus estimate of +50 Bcf. With total inventories now at 3298 Bcf, storage sits modestly above the 5-year average, providing a comfortable buffer and represents a significant deficit compared to last year.
Near-normal weather expectations are keeping weather-related volatility subdued. Futures remained largely flat, having priced in the expectation.
Why This Matters:
This slight bullish surprise puts upward pressure on gas prices and, by extension, ERCOT power pricing.
Summary
Working gas in storage was 3,351 Bcf as of Friday, September 18, 2026, according to EIA estimates. This represents a net increase of 53 Bcf from the previous week. Stocks were 146 Bcf less than last year at this time and 95 Bcf above the five-year average of 3,256 Bcf. At 3,351 Bcf, total working gas is within the five-year historical range.
