EIA Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report & Insight 8/6/2026
EIA Storage Update: +33 Bcf vs +30 Bcf Est
Amid the peak summer cooling season, power burn continues to drive natural gas demand, the EIA reported an injection of 33 Bcf for the week. This was 3 Bcf larger than the consensus estimate of +30 Bcf. With total inventories now at 3117 Bcf, storage sits well above average, continuing to cap significant upside price risk and represents a roughly flat year-over-year.
Near-normal weather expectations are keeping weather-related volatility subdued. Futures ticked down slightly following the print.
Why This Matters:
This slight bearish surprise puts downward pressure on gas prices and, by extension, ERCOT power pricing.
Summary
Working gas in storage was 3,117 Bcf as of Friday, July 31, 2026, according to EIA estimates. This represents a net increase of 33 Bcf from the previous week. Stocks were 12 Bcf less than last year at this time and 195 Bcf above the five-year average of 2,922 Bcf. At 3,117 Bcf, total working gas is within the five-year historical range.
